Presentation Proposal
Visicalc, the first spreadsheet, was also the first killer app. Fast forward to today, and we have Google Sheets, a powerful web-based application that everyone can use whether you are an student, teacher, administrator, or secretary. My session, “Google Sheets Glow Up”, is designed to enhance your practical knowledge on Google Sheets and help you utilize its various features to its fullest capability.
Throughout this 45-minute interactive session, I will introduce and demonstrate several functionalities of Google Sheets that can be very useful in your classroom and school. Some of features include:
- Data Validation – We like to share a spreadsheet to gather information, but how can we stop Jane from entering something irrelevant or Rob from inserting data in a wrong format? Data validation tools ensure that the data entered into a cell meets certain criteria. This function is an essential tool when we are dealing with large data entry tasks and helps prevent errors and ensures consistency and accuracy of the critical data collected.
- SQL Queries – Google sheets provides a custom function named Google Visualization API Query Language which is similar to SQL and can simplify your data lookup tasks. These queries can turbo-boost what you may have used vlookup functions for in the past.
- Filters and Data Views – Excel’s “Filter” feature is an essential tool for any spreadsheet user, and Google Sheets is no different. It allows you to quickly find and focus on specific information in a spreadsheet. In this session, we will explore how to apply filters to sort and find data. These views can be saved for future use.
- Pivot Tables – Pivot Tables are one of the most powerful and intimidating features of Google Sheets. Wouldn’t you love to brainstorm meaningful data summaries without any complex, time-consuming processes? A Pivot Table takes simple column-wise data as input, and groups entries into a two-dimensional table that provides a multi-dimensional analysis. During the session, you will learn how to create, manipulate, and customize Pivot Tables for data analysis effectively.
By focusing on real-world use cases, participants will be able to start these intermediate level features of Google Sheets.
