Minecraft is coming to Chromebooks
Microsoft announced the Minecraft: Education Edition Chromebook Beta is now open for people to try! There are a few caveats with the beta:
- Minecraft is the Android version, so your Chromebook must support the Google Play store.
- You can’t use a managed account (I would assume this means a managed Chromebook too).
- You’ll need a Microsoft account
There is a FAQ available to answer your other questions. The Microsoft account requirement will be an issue for non-Microsoft 365 school districts, but it is not insurmountable. There is a free 365 tier that school districts can use, and there is only one caveat when using both G Suite for Education and Microsoft 365 in the same school district. Email can only be used one or the other. So, if you are currently a Google school, your district can sign up for Microsoft 365 and use everything in it except email.
The good news is that this version will be fully compatible with Minecraft for other operating systems
