Play is what happens when we accept these limitations, narrow our focus, and, consequently, have fun. Which is also how to live a good life. Manipulating a soccer ball into a goal is no different than treating ordinary circumstances — like grocery shopping, lawn mowing, and making PowerPoints — as sources for meaning and joy.

This reminds be a lot about the paradox of choice, where the more options you have, the less satisfied you are with your final decision. By setting limits, you’re forced to be a lot more creative. The movie Deadpool came out this summer, and went on to be the highest grossing rated R movie of all time. The secret of its success? Besides the rugged good looks or Ryan Reynolds, it had a very modest budget. Where most super hero movies get $150-200 million dollars, Deadpool had $58 million, which forced a tight script and cut down on the special effects, and still made a great movie (especially when you see how terrible Batman Vs. Superman was).
