The problem with alerts is that they don’t scale. They create noise. Every time you poke everyone with a bulletin, you’ve taken attention away with no hope of giving it back.
One of the best things you can ever do for yourself is to take control of the notifications on your phone.
My default ringtone is silence. My default text tone is silence. I’ve gone into the settings and turned off sound notifications for almost every app. There are a few people in my contacts that have a sound notification turned on for messages from them, but for the most part, my phone is entirely silence.
I get strange looks from people when I tell them I don’t get a notification for texts. They don’t believe me, but, I am in control of my phone, not the other way around.
Look at ways to control how you notify others. Use scheduling in your email software to send emails during working hours. Most of the time a text can be replaced with an email. If you need to know something right now, a call is probably better. But, how often do you need an answer RIGHT NOW?
