What is Edcerpts?
I’ve been grasping with figuring out what’s the best way to connect the educational community with each other. There are so many doing great things, but, as always, connecting those great things with the people that will benefit is difficult.
However, a few years ago I stumbled upon Paged Out!. It is an experimental, one page is one article, technology focused PDF magazine.
Edcerpts will emulate the Paged Out! magazine, except with an education focus.
I don’t have anything to share
Imposter syndrome and self-doubt are prevalent feelings when it comes to sharing what we know. However, we do things every day that others have not done. Writing about what you’ve done has the ability to help someone else.
Ali Abdaal talks about the book Show Your Work, which is all about teaching others what you know. No one knows everything, but the smart ones know that and know that they can learn from anyone.
What can I submit
Each submission will be one page in the magazine. The articles should be about education, and can be on pedagogy, tips, apps, and more. Examples include articles on classroom management, technology integration, or full page graphic organizers, apps cheatsheets, and classroom posters.
This magazine is different from others because you have total freedom on how to layout your submission. The only restrictions are submitting as an 8.5″x11″ PDF and leaving a margin of .75″ around the edge of the entire document. Here is an example with my Gmail Keyboard Shortcuts Cheat Sheet. While your submission can include content in the margin, there is no guarantee that the content will be visible.
Submission guidelines
Submissions are one 8.5″x11″ PDF document and can be created with the tool of the submitter’s choosing. For example, you can use Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint to create your submission, just change the size of the slides to 8.5″x11″ before creating the document. Please leave .75″ free on each side of your submission. These are very US centric measurements, but I’m hoping to support A4 size in the future.
The border around the edge doesn’t mean you can’t have content there, it’s that the content may get covered up by a header and footer. If you want to get creative and have graphics overflowing the page, that’s ok, just be aware that it may be covered.
Each submission should be self contained. For example, if you are submitting a graphic organizer, the entire organizer would be the submission, without linking out to additional documents. The idea is that the contents of the magazine will always be useful, even if the links contained in the document have died.
Links in the submission should be as few as possible. That’s not to say you can’t have links, just be aware that the resource to which you are linking may disappear. Self-promotion is allowed, feel free to link to your blog.
Submissions are to be non-commercial in nature, the magazine is there to celebrate what real teachers and staff are doing in our schools, not for companies to submit a full page ad as their product. However, that doesn’t mean that you as a teacher can’t submit an article on how you are using a particular tool or website.
Submission and publishing calendar
The magazine will be released on the third Tuesday of the month, with the first issue planned for April 18th, 2023. Cutoff for submissions will be the last Tuesday of the previous month, so for the first issue the cut off date will be March 28th, 2023.
You can submit your article using the Google Form (which requires a Google account) or you can email the article to [email protected]. Submitting an article requires you to assign the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license to the content. This allows your article to be copied and adapted freely.
